The much-discussed Election Commission (EC) formation bill was passed in the National Assembly last Thursday (January 27). Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque proposed to pass the ‘Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Appointment Bill-2022’ as per Article 116 (1) of the Constitution, which was passed by voice vote.
The six-member search committee will be headed by a judge of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division.
The committee will propose the names of 10 people considering the qualifications mentioned in the law.
Later, the President will form a new election commission with five out of 10 members.
Earlier, some opposition MPs had proposed to send the bill to the committee for scrutiny. Besides, many amendments of the opposition were adopted. One of them is a woman will be in the search committee.
